Long-spined Sea Urchin

Diadema setosum
About the species

A jet-black urchin bristling with extremely long, needle-thin spines and a tell-tale orange ring around its anal cone. The fragile spines puncture skin easily, snap off and inject a mild venom that burns and inflames. It clusters in reef crevices by day and fans out across the bottom after dark.
