A heavyset grouper mottled in brown and grey with dark blotches and fine spots, common around Red Sea wrecks and reef bases. It lurks in caves and under ledges, ambushing fish and crustaceans. Old individuals grow very large and become bold residents of dive sites like the Thistlegorm.
