Ray

Porcupine Ray

Urogymnus asperrimus
VU· VulnerableCaution

A heavyset, pale ray whose disc and tail are studded with rows of coarse, thorn-like denticles, giving it a sandpaper armour. Unusually, it lacks a venomous stinger, relying instead on its spiky hide for defence. It roots through sandy lagoons and reef flats for buried prey.
