Crocodilefish

Papilloculiceps longiceps
About the species

A long, flattened ambush predator with a broad crocodile-like head and intricately frilled eyes that break up its outline on sand and rubble. It lies still and lets unwary fish swim within reach of its sudden, gaping strike. Approachable for photographers, but its hidden spines reward a careless hand with a painful jab.
