A smaller, exquisitely patterned turtle with a narrow pointed beak and overlapping amber-and-brown shell scutes. It picks among coral crevices for sponges and invertebrates, making it a common reef sighting around Hurghada and the Brothers Islands. Its beautiful shell, long the source of 'tortoiseshell', has driven it to critical endangerment.
